The Sonnet at Tennyson Cultivates Well-being Through Engaging Art and Music Programs
The Sonnet at Tennyson, a senior living community in Madison managed by Koru Health, incorporates art and music activities into its programming for residents, including those in memory care. These activities are included to provide opportunities for non-verbal expression, sensory stimulation, and emotional engagement, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing cognitive changes associated with dementia.
Recent activities at the community include:
Creative Workshops: Residents participated in "Creative Cafe" sessions, painting flower pots. Subsequent workshops involved galaxy painting and the creation of Easter decorations.
Live Music Performance: Musician Casey Carney performed for residents, playing guitar and ukulele and singing various musical genres. Residents were able to request songs and many participated in the performance too.
Crafting Activity: Residents engaged in creating flower arrangements using marshmallow candies.
Ongoing Craft Projects: Residents have participated in activities such as making lanterns.
Knitting Group: A resident-led knitting club provides an opportunity for skill-sharing and socializing.
For residents in memory care, these activities can offer a means of communication beyond words, evoke memories, and provide a sense of calm and enjoyment. Engaging with art and music can stimulate different areas of the brain, potentially improving focus and reducing agitation. The sensory nature of these activities can also be grounding and provide a positive outlet for emotions.
Michele Little, Executive Director of The Sonnet at Tennyson, commented, "Creating opportunities for engagement through the arts is a vital part of our commitment to holistic well-being. These activities allow residents to connect with themselves and others in meaningful ways, fostering moments of joy, expression, and connection, regardless of cognitive abilities."
The community plans to display residents' artwork during an open house scheduled for May 13th.
